WORDS by Martin Richling
Of course, most people use words wrongly all day long. They define words—not from the AKJB PCE—or the 1828 Dictionary, but their own brains. They think they understand what they are saying.
Most people think that the word “decimate” means to destroy something completely. If something or someone is “decimated” they think that that thing or person is destroyed.
But look at the definition.
“DEC'IMATE, v.t. [L. decimo, from decem, ten.]
1. To tithe; to take the tenth part.
2. To select by lot and punish with death every tenth man; a practice in armies, for punishing mutinous or unfaithful troops.
3. To take every tenth.”
Just 10% of the thing or person is having something happen to it or them.
Ten Percent. (10%)
